We tried this durring the great depression and it didn't work. Instead, it made everything considerably worse. Here's a wikipedia article on the tariff, called the Smoot-Hawley tariff: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoot-Hawley_Tariff_Act

What will happen is, other countries will stop importing goods here, and the businesses that provide jobs, that depend on those cheap goods will go bankrupt. The countries that sell us these cheap goods, whom also depend on our manufacture of tools will then go bankrupt and on the whole there will be fewer jobs everywhere.

The proper response is to have our politicians work with other countries to reduce the barriers to trade (taxes, ect) and make our products demanded world wide as a result. There will be more trade, which will create more jobs.

How about a federal law requiring any product or parts coming into the US provide proof of our manufacturing safety standards by those supply companies with 3rd party random inspections (by the US) and documentation? We do the same thing for certain woods already. Yes, maybe a paperwork nightmare but WTH? Can't be worse than the status quo and we need to level the playing field!

Bringing jobs back to country an d health care can be combined on a state level where local aide already exists such as Mass. Subsidy of these benefits may also encourage other states if it brings in new employers.
