What people here don’t understand is that the Honduran constitution specifies clear roles for the military in maintaining constitutional order and rule of law, including the administration of national balloting and enforcement of the strict provision of a single term for the president.

Constitutionally, the military had no choice but to refuse to administer the illegal referendum. Zelaya ordered the chief of the general staff to hold the referendum. He refused. Zelaya fired him, which was immediately ruled illegal by the supreme court. Zelaya refused to reinstate the general. Then the heads of the services promptly resigned in protest.

Since it seems that the general population is opposed to lethal armament for the shipping crews and captains. I would suggest arming them with non-lethal grenade launchers or something of similar power that shoots magnetic tracking devises. If a situation arose this would allow crews to shoot tracking devices onto the boats, which would allow the Naval ships/planes to follow and destroy or disable boats used for the attacks.

Establish documented trading lanes which the US will patrol and for those countries desiring protection, they can pay the US a fee. Since nobody else seems to want to come to the table with a real solution, let the US lead. This would also have the added benefit of subsidizing our navy, thereby helping our nation’s budget and economy and providing for a strengthened military. Why not establish a new alliance in a sense, with the US leading and helping those who don’t have the ability to help themselves, but not for free this time. All countries who don’t want to participate are on their own.

In the pirates problem, I wonder if one could have used instead anesthetics shots instead of bullets. I think that it would have been more humane and accepted by all in the world including the pirates and might have help starting to find a solution. The solution in Somalia being to remove the herb that people chew on which make them becoming manic at all times and then doing things they would not do if they were not under the influence of that herb.

All of the countries that have had ships attacked should form an alliance of 10 or so and give the pirates a stop date and if they do not stop, a blockade of all outgoing shiping from their shores should be put in effect. also There food, water, and other needs should be cut off until they stop the pirate attacks.

Instead of negotiating to pay the pirates money, turn it around – let them negotiate for their lives. If they release the hostage, their lives will be spared, but they will face trial. Otherwise launch an assault to free the hostage. The needs of many versus the needs of one.

If harm comes to the captain, destroy all ships in the water at the port of the pirates haven that are large enough to use for piracy.
