Governor Dean for Secretary of HHS

I am in favor of Dr. Howard Dean being nominated for Secretary of HHS, now that the Daschle nomination has been withdrawn.

Replacement for Daschle

How about Arnold Schwartzenegger as a replacement candidate for HHS secretary? He’s progressive, effective, republican (bipartisan), and has a Kennedy connection. He also might be thrilled to get out from under California’s current crisis.

health care

you have heard of the USMC? How about a NAMC for health care North American Medical Corps where those who have the ability to go to med schools but can not afford and will not indebt themselves let them serve for 6 years in this med corps after they finish school as repayment, and let those who do not have health insurance go there and let the free market heal the rest by having limited regulation as an oversight and taking the special rates out of the hands of the employers and unions and let the insurance companies compete for our dollars

We have a team of qualified and experienced profesionals who can train teachers who can in turn teach American people to adopt a natral healthy life style and promote health consciousness in fellow Americans. This will reduce their medical expenses steadily and save approximately 20 billions of dollars every year to begin with. Additional benefits will also include reduction in absenteeism from work, increase in higher quality of productivity and creativity which can be evaluated on the long run to a much higher revenue to America.

From all of my reading about the government, health care, the food supply and organizations related to production of our food I have learned one thing – I cannot trust anyone I am ‘supposed’ to to ensure that what I am eating isn’t completely saturated in artificial garbage and chemicals. Why is milk with BGH banned in most of the world and legal for consumption here? Why do we allow top polluters and producers of foods that are been proven to cause cancer as well as multitude of other horrible effects to continue their production just because they are top campaigne contributers? Why is meat found to be contaminated allowed to go into the school program to feed children? There is so much money going into research for this disease and that disease, we need to look at the content of our food to see what has led us to the state of health we are in. This not only falls into the category of health care, but also environment/climate. I want my children to breathe clean air, to eat food that doesn’t come back from the lab with over 90 pesticides/chemicals shown, and if I can’t afford to pack lunches for them I want to make sure the food given to them in school isn’t a tray of contaminated meat, whole milk and artificial sweets. We needn’t look beyond our own plates to begin solving some of the biggest issues we have in regard to health and environment.

Healthcare for All?

Both parties stressed during the campaign the need to control healthcare costs and make healthcare available to all. Noble concepts that have been idealistically debated for decades. But I never heard any candidates make the quality of that care an important piece of the puzzle. We don’t need free access to a healthcare system where you enter the hospital with a hernia and die from a hospital-acquired infection, or they operate on the wrong leg, or you get a drug infusion ten times what you should have gotten, etc. My point is that you need to put major emphasis on the quality and safety of the care we are getting and should get in the future. You can have a great “system” but the patient contact (physically and verbally) is from people, and people must have the right attitude, supervision, and accountability. Some not so insignificant types of issues: discharge instructions should be given to a patient by someone who can speak clearly the language of that patient so that they understand what they need to do when they go home…if a patient wants to talk to his doctor/surgeon don’t tell him the doctor is on the way and 5 hours later he shows up…all staff entering a patient’s room should wash their hands…see what I mean? Caregiver in general do care, but hospitals need to be safer places or else they will be avoided at all costs. DON’T LEAVE QUALITY OF CARE OUT OF THE EQUATION!

Health Care, Expenses

Look into the cost involved in other countries for the same services. E.g. I was in St. Peterbourg, FL in an emergency room in 2005 and paid $ 2.000,– approx. Last week I had unfortunately to go in an emergency room in Dubai (4 years later, situation much more difficult, the city is at least as expensive as FL) and paid $ 350,–. Italy provides this service free of charge for its visitors, which is also uncommon.

Talk to the German Government, they were able, by monitorizing all parties involved, to keep the cost for all services much lower than in the US and guaranteeing the same time an excellent service to its citizens.

Doctors shall earn good, but one Ferrari is enough, an additional Bentley not necessary.

A plan for health care…

Create a large, prestigious, new scholarship program that covers all the costs of medical and nursing school. Those students who receive them must sign a contract stating that they will work at least ten years for the public healthcare system at a fixed but reasonable salary (say $100K per year for MD’s, $60K per year for nurses). While these students are going through medical and nursing school, build new public hospitals and medical offices to house them. Totally bypass the private health insurance “industry” (they make nothing…just make it harder for folks to get treatment).

City Bike Paths for Our Children

I travel to Europe frequently and I am always impressed in the extent some European countries address bike paths. We should encourage this in our country and invest in this for future generations. We speak about obesity in children and adults, saving fuel and creating jobs. If our government would aggressively advance and develop bike paths like we did with the interstate system, it would be a remarkable undertaking. One would only have to look to The Netherlands to understand that bike riding is a way of life that generations of people make a daily part of their lives as they grow up bike riding just about every day of their life.

I fully understand that there are many areas in our massive country that this effort would be impractical, however there are so many places where it would be extremely practical and should be implemented.

I live on the east coast of Florida a little north of the Palm Beach area. We have very good weather for the most part of the year, however so few children ride their bikes to school and just about no one would ever consider riding a bike a mile or two to the store or coffee / donut shop. This is because we do not encourage this very healthy exercise by offering safe dedicated bike paths. Two points to consider, here we provide bike lanes on US 1 a very busy highway where you are on your bike, in a marked bike path about 3 feet wide, with traffic driving alongside you at 45 to 50 mph, cars turning and people speaking on their cellphones, a very safe and uncomfortable environment! Your protection from the cars and trucks driving by is a white painted line. No parent in their right mind would ever allow their child to utilize one of these paths! Second point is that we are located is about 1 1/2 miles from my son’s school. The sidewalks are such that if young bike riders mistakenly go off the edge of the sidewalk which serves as the road’s curb, they would fall right into traffic. We have all seen the way children can become distracted and these incidents do happen. Presently my son or myself could not ride our bikes to the county park (where he plays soccer) located by car about 2 – 3 miles away from our home. He would have to ride about 7 miles to get to the park and a large portion of that journey would be on a four lane highway filled with much traffic! It is no surprise that generations of people no longer ride bikes.

What could be a better way to encourage exercise and saving fuel? Nice paths designed for bikes and short cuts to different neighborhoods. At the very least safe bike paths would protect our children and others as well as encourage people to start riding a bike again. I would have to imagine that the government also purchasing land for bike paths may also help the real estate market in a small way, however I do not know if this helps to support my idea.

I listed this under Health Care, but the heading could really read, jobs, energy, environment as well as health care. Please consider the merit of this suggestion in your public work projects. I hope you find the right path!
