Wildfires are a huge problem, creating loss of life, property, adding to global warming, and further harm to the economy. Couldn’t we try harder (I understand the stimulus package increases funding for science) to find new ways to stop them?

This idea covers 2 catagories, Jobs & Enviroment-

Why can’t we create a “Flood” pipeline? Have pipes placed in high flood areas- these are the start points (place in States that are prone to flooding) set them up with a separate “Flood” pipeline that will pump the flood waters through several cleaning stations (creating jobs to operate install the pipes & to make & operate the pump & cleaning stations) then the cleaned water can be diverted to States that need water. Imagine being able to provide water to states & stopping Flood waters BEFORE they can cause damage! Wouldn’t THAT be nice? I heard somebody suggesting stealing/draining the “Great Lakes” to supply Nevada & Arizona with water. If we can do something like that- why not take it from areas that have too much water rather than depleating our beautiful natural resorces! Lakes are beautiful- Floods are hideous. We need jobs & some real solutions- here’s an idea for both!

Litter and recycling

U.S. citizens are slobs when it comes to litter. Just go to Europe and see how beautiful and clean the streets and cities are! Years ago there was a 2 cent deposit required on bottles that was returned when the empties were returned. So no one threw them away! How about reinstating a similar deposit on bottles, cans, styrofoam containers, etc. Perhaps the EPA could study how to implement this in a sensible fashion and tie it in to recycling. Also, it is currently more expensive to buy recycled materials than wasteful original packaging. What kind of message does that send? It would be wonderful to no longer see our streets lined with endless litter and living up to the name “ugly Americans.”

Decrease Unwanted Catalog Mailings

Many people receive unwanted paper catalogs month after month. They can be stopped if the recipient takes the trouble to call the 800 number on the catalog and ask to be removed; however, most people are busy, don’t bother, and just dispose or recycle the catalog. My suggestion is to require the catalog senders to include a postage paid card inside the catalog to which people could affix the mailing label on the catalog (or fill it in) and mail it back to the catalog sender. Magazines already include such cards for people to use to subscribe — why not require catalog senders to include such a card and cut down on wasted catalog paper, printing and mailing. Yes, some catalogs do get recycled, but better to avoid printing and mailing in the first place.

Universal Batteries and Electronic Device Chargers

Get the cell phone, camera and other electronic device manufacturers to come up with a standard battery and charger for their items. There is no reason to have to throw out a charger and get a new one every time you get a new cell phone (even if it’s made by the same company).

The same holds true for cameras and other electronic devices, but the worst offender is the cell phone.

It’s all just ending up in a landfill.

When people think of addressing environmental or global warming issues, they generally think of “direct” actions such as laws restricting emissions or subsidizing solar energy. What we need to support those direct actions is an “indirect” program that we could start implementing immediately. I propose that we harness a necessary government function–taxation–in support of such initiatives.

In short, my proposal is that we ENTIRELY REVAMP OUR TAX SYSTEM SO THAT ALL TAXATION SERVES A DUAL PURPOSE. NOT ONLY WOULD TAXES GENERATE FUNDS FOR VARIOUS PUBLIC PURPOSES AS THEY DO TODAY, BUT EACH TAX WOULD ENCOURAGE MOVEMENT TOWARD SOME DESIRABLE PUBLIC GOAL.

The idea is that since government must raise the money it needs to do its work, why not raise it in such a way as to reward and encourage actions by private individuals and corporations that will enhance the public good? These would not be punitive or incremental taxes–they would SUBSTITUTE for current taxes. Analogous to the long-term effect of gravity in the cosmos, these taxes would act as the gentle, but, inevitable shaper of our world.
